Stone masonry & walling

Stone masonry contractors
for the North West

Genuine stonemasonry skill runs in the Foster family. We build natural stone and brick walls, dry stone walling, retaining structures and heritage repairs across the North West, cut, coursed and pointed properly rather than patched.

Hand skills kept in the family

Good stone work cannot be rushed and it cannot be faked. Our masons cut, course and point by hand, which is why our walling work stands up to close inspection on heritage schemes, town centre regeneration and structural retaining works alike.

Because we are also a civil engineering contractor, our retaining walls are engineered as well as built: proper foundations, drainage behind the face and reinforced cores where the structure demands it.

What we build

Masonry and walling capability

Natural stone walling

Coursed and random rubble natural stone walling, cut, dressed and pointed by time-served masons. New build boundary walls, feature walls and faced structures.

Dry stone walling

Traditional dry stone walling and rebuilds, laid without mortar and built to stand. Suitable for boundaries, retaining features and conservation settings.

Retaining walls

Structural retaining walls and gravity structures, from reinforced concrete cores faced in coursed natural stone to masonry retaining walls on sloping sites.

Heritage masonry repair

Repair and repointing of historic masonry in conservation areas, matched stone and mortar, and careful hand work around listed and sensitive structures.

Recent stone work

Built to stand, faced to last

The photographs on this page are our own work, not library pictures. Recent schemes include reinforced retaining structures alongside a live watercourse, faced in coursed natural stone, and structural stone walling on sloping development sites across the North West.

Masonry often sits inside a wider package of paving, kerbing and civils work. Where it does, we deliver the lot with our own people, so the interfaces are our problem to solve rather than yours. See how the trades combine on our services page.
